China Automotive Wiring Harness Market Trends and Drivers:
The most important current driver affecting the Chinese automotive harness market is the faster than normal, government-sponsored transition to New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), causing a radical change in product architectures and in the scales of demand. In contrast to the 12-volt electrical architectures used in conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) often use more complex high-voltage (400 volts or even 800 volts) electrical architectures that distribute power from the battery to the electric motor, inverter and onboard charger. The new harnesses could involve thicker wires and higher temperature rated insulation materials due to the increase in current demand, resulting in a greater cost per vehicle. To meet the increased range and fast charging demands of EVs, the harness supply base has focused on shielding technology to eliminate electromagnetic noise that could adversely affect electronic controls found in many of the automotive electrical systems today. This ultimately creates a divide within the market, where suppliers of conventional systems have followed this trend and have quickly redirected their production and R&D attention away from conventional low-voltage systems and into these high-voltage systems to capture a larger share of a rapidly growing market, which constitutes more than a third of all new vehicle sales in China.
Another is the increasing complexity and value of wiring harnesses caused by the addition of ADAS technologies, infotainment systems and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. For instance, premium cars in general, and vehicles from domestic OEMs more specifically, already include a variety of sensors, including LiDAR, radar and high resolution cameras, which each require high speed data cabling and associated connectors. Systems are no longer only power-distribution systems, but also multi-functional data highways. This requires the use of coaxial cables, and fine gauge wires that have a high frequency and a low signal loss. The use of a large number of wires makes the total length per vehicle more than 5 km likely, and imposes weight, space-utilization, and assembly challenges. Harness design is moving toward modular and zonal architectures, to reduce design complexity, mass, cost per vehicle and improve reliability. Manufacturers which have expertise in miniaturization, design high precision connectors in-house and have a successful collaboration with semiconductor manufacturers are better positioned as the harness is becoming the smart vehicle's nervous system.
The third dynamic relates to the localize the supply chain and promote supply chain resilience due to geopolitics, cost, and the accelerated development cycle of the new models. Faced with increasing global trade friction and a national strategy for industrial and tech self-sufficiency, Chinese OEMs and their wiring harness suppliers have strengthened efforts to localize all aspects of the harness supply chain. As a result, several Chinese domestic harness suppliers have moved up the value chain to design their own connectors and terminals. Leveraging proximity to automaker research and development centers, they now also participate in co-development efforts to reduce the time between concept and production. They are vertically integrating manufacturing processes and forming long term relationships with raw material suppliers to reduce their exposure to market volatility in the cost of harness raw materials such as copper wire and petroleum based insulating compounds. This helps to maintain a stable price, while ensuring a steady flow of goods. It seeks to ease a strong, localized supply chain that reduces risk, while also enabling rapid adaptation to the ever-evolving specifications of the Chinese automotive market, keeping pace with innovations.
